Week on Wednesday (because I missed my round-up and summary from the weekend)

Blogger fail, I didn’t post a Friday Round-Up this week or a Saturday Summary, womp womp! Why, you ask? Because I was accepting a new job and handing in my notice, yipee!

If you’ve read any of my recent Friday Round-Ups, you’ll know that I have been growing increasingly dissatisfied with my current role. I’ll now be moving to a part time marketing manager role and setting up as a freelance marketing consultant! Exciting stuff!

What does that mean for my health? Well…
1) I’ll no longer be eating my feelings (mainly boredom & anger)
2) My mind will be clearer and I’ll have less stress and anxiety – remember folks, mental health is as important as physical health (if not more so)
3)I’ll be eating at home a lot more, so I’ll need to be really careful not to snack, and make sure I have lot’s of quick healthy lunch options

Since it has been a while since my last post, I’ve got loads to share!

Exercise
I’ve been getting back into my running and did a 9.8km run last Thursday and then did hill sprints on Monday. I also squeezed in a couple of at-home body-weight circuits.

It is well and truly winter in Yorkshire – we’ve got snow today! I can’t remember snow this early for years!

This is going to make outdoor runs a bit trickier, but I’m prepared with a new head torch and I’ve brought the thermals back out of storage!

Eating
Last week was total gluttony as we had two parties at work which involved sweets, junk food and krispy kremes!
I tried to balance it out with healthier main meals, but I’ll chalk it down as a bad week for balanced eating!

Friday Round-Up: Where’s the week gone?

Phew, that week sped by! In the run up to Christmas I find that the time goes really quickly and the days blur together! To break up the weeks I’ve booked a couple of events/getaways.

Exercise has been non-existent so far this week, but I’ll be at Zumba tonight, whoop whoop! I’m really looking forward to some evening runs in the dark, but I do need a head torch. If you have any recommendations let me know in the comments section! I’ve also brought my thermal running gear out of storage to make sure I’m warm as the nights are getting so chilly!

I’ve been more balanced than usual this week in terms of diet, and I’ve really upped my intake of fresh fruits and vegetables. But I did say balanced, so I’ve also enjoyed several baked goods and the odd alcoholic tipple.

-4lb this week!

So this week I lost 4lb, wahoo!

I combined a couple of good workouts at the gym with generally eating a healthy balanced diet. I even had popcorn and toffee poppets at the cinema, and still managed to lose the weight!

I think a lot of my success this week can be attributed to portion control. I have been careful not to overfill my plate, eat mindfully and slowly so that I register how full I am before going back for seconds, and also upping my protein intake whilst reducing some of the unnecessary starchy carbs I have been consuming.

Here’s a little diagram about portion control, although it should also include fruits and a little dairy like milk and cheese, and not forgetting healthy fats:

Get the balance right

We all know that in order to maintain a healthy body, we need to have a balanced diet including carbohydrates, protein, fruit, vegetables, dairy products AND healthy fats.

Diets that promote high protein intake with limited carbs can be bad for you, even if you don’t eat a lot of calories, the fat content is high and you often miss out on fruit and vegetables. Likewise, just eating fruit and vegetables often means that you are eating a lot of sugar, and not enough protein to maintain your muscles and energy levels!

I have been guilty in the past of eating too many starchy carbs, not enough vegetables and really unhealthy fats, like butter (mmmm bread and butter, my favourite!)

So now I am really aiming to eat a more balanced diet. Here is my tea from last night:

  • Tuna in spring water – protein
  • Hard boiled egg – protein and fat
  • 2 medium new potatoes – carbs
  • Lettuce and Cucumber – vegetables
  • Peppers sauteed in balsamic vinegar – vegetables and flavour

 

 

Let’s forget the fad diets and do what we know is right….enjoy a balanced diet and don’t deprive yourself of food that you enjoy.
